Moors Valley Golf Course Review

As with all our blog posts, this is written from the perspective of distinctly average golfers.
Set amongst Moors Valley Country Park and Forest in Dorset, the golf course has some stunning holes amongst the heathland/woodland layout. Measuring just under 6000 yards with a par 70 from the yellows, the course is a decent test for the average golfer, with a mix of long and short par 4s throughout, plenty of hazards, but lots of bailout room for the standard mix of slices and hooks that are inevitable.

The course eases you in to the round with a couple of 300ish yard par 4s offering realistic par opportunities for the distinctly average golfers among us, with the strong-armed and strong-willed thinking about reaching the green from the tee - something that we obviously failed to do. The course starts to bite back from the 3rd however with some long par 4s, unable to be reached in two unless you hit an absolute worldy of a tee shot followed by a fluky wood off the deck. Aiming for bogey golf on these holes is a sensible plan. I did not do this on the 5th hole - hooking my 3 wood off the deck in to the trees, duffing my chip out, hitting a tree, hitting another tree, and then finally hooking a 5 iron down the fairway; brilliant.

The back 9 seems slightly easier with a couple of par 5s offering par chances mixed with short par 4s that require precise tee shots. Placement on these, particularly the 10th, 13th, 17th and 18th, is vital with hazards and trees ready to punish errant tee shots.
We played the course in December, and we were all hugely surprised by the condition it was in. The greens were fantastic; very consistent and beautifully designed and cared for. The bunkers were also extremely well looked after - trust me, I tried almost all of them!

This all added to the wonderful design of the course, with such great variety from one hole to the next - I can't remember ever having a shot that was the same as one I'd just hit a few minutes ago.
We booked online and managed to find a fantastic deal; £40 for a fourball! Yes that's £10 each! Having not played the course before we thought we might as well give it a go, for that price it doesn't really matter how good the course is - but we were blown away by the quality of the place. At the time of writing, the regular price is £25 for a round, but even this is an absolute steal for the quality of the course - there are many worse courses around the country that charge a great deal more! What's more, the pro shop gave us 2 for 1 vouchers when we signed in so that we would go back to play again. It's fair to say that even without the voucher, we would definitely go back.
